Bank of Canada governor Macklem ‘concerned’ about renters as their credit card debt skyrockets

Macklem warned Tuesday that the share of mortgage-free Canadians with a credit card balance of at least 90 per cent of their limit is above historical levels.

On Tuesday, Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem emphasized that economic growth is not as strong as central bankers expected, and so it is “reasonable to expect” future interest rate cuts.


Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem says he is worried about the rise in distressed borrowers without a mortgage — mainly renters — who are increasingly relying on credit card debt to make ends meet. 

In a speech to the Canadian Bankers Association on Tuesday Macklem warned that the share of mortgage-free Canadians with a credit card balance of at least 90 per cent of their limit is above historical levels.
