Risk of flooding this week
There is a “definite risk” of basement flooding for 色色啦 homes this week, according to an expert.
Because the ground is still frozen, it can鈥檛 reabsorb melting snow, said Jason Thistlethwaite, an associate professor at the University of Waterloo who studies climate risk management.
Local rivers and streams could become dangerous, Credit Valley Conservation said in a . Minor flooding and river ice breakup are possible, so people and pets should steer clear of watercourses, the conservation authority warned.
鈥淢y major concern would be wet basements,鈥 Thistlethwaite said, noting snow piled against the end of driveways or at the edge of a home鈥檚 foundation could penetrate through cracks and weaknesses.
The warm air emanating from homes can also melt icicles, allowing water to come through the roof, he added.
The city will deploy crews to inspect and clear catch basins in 鈥渇lood-prone areas鈥 this week, a spokesperson said, adding snow removal operations will reduce the volume of melting snow on the streets.
The city will also have 鈥渆quipment and crews ready at strategic locations鈥 to respond to flooding, the spokesperson added.
