According to police, it took six minutes and 42 seconds for the initial 911 call to be answered. Paramedics weren’t dispatched until 10:05 p.m. and arrived alongside police at 10:11 p.m.
Mayor Olivia Chow said the response times were “not acceptable.”
The city’s paramedic service has since launched a review into the handling of the call.Â
Police have so far released little about the fatal shooting itself, saying they do not know how many suspects were involved, how they fled or how many shots were fired.Â
Sections of the neighbourhood, including the front of nearby York Humber High School, were taped off. Investigators didn’t comment on whether the shooting has any connection to the school.
The killing marked ɫɫÀ²’s 14th homicide of the year and came during a week of deadly violence across the city, including a shooting in Lawrence Heights that left a 31-year-old wheelchair user dead, and another shooting that saw a man in his 30s killed in Scarborough.
Police say Wednesday’s update will be livestreamed on YouTube.Â
