Yelena Vaiman and her daughter Milana, 5. Milana is autistic, non-verbal and has significant developmental delays, and it’s been very hard for Yelena to figure out what to do for kindergarten in September.


Months ago, Yelena Vaiman began preparing for her daughter鈥檚 entry into kindergarten this fall. She knew it wouldn鈥檛 be simple, but didn’t expect 鈥渦nnecessary roadblocks鈥 that left her feeling 鈥渢rapped in a bureaucratic maze.鈥

Five-year-old Milana is autistic with significant developmental delays. She’s聽non-verbal, and doesn’t respond to her name or understand danger. At home, adults watch her closely聽鈥 otherwise she may wander, chew paper, eat soil or throw toys at her younger sister.
