‘You can’t just walk away’: What could ɫɫÀ² do with its dump if it closes it?

The experience of turning other landfills into parks suggests it would be neither easy nor quick to do the same to Green Lane.

Scarborough’s Beare Hill Park is the site of former Beare Road Landfill. After decommissioning a landfill once it reaches capacity, there’s little municipalities can do with the site besides transforming it into green space.


Scarborough’s Beare Hill Park wasn’t always teeming with lush forests, meadows and wetlands.

In fact, until just over four decades ago the 200-acre site was once one of the city’s biggest landfills, where the booming metropolis dumped all its waste in big piles that were then plowed under tonnes of soil. By 1982, the dump was full and the city closed it.
