Could this tragedy, which was so catastrophic for so many families and children, have been averted? Why weren’t flash-flood warnings treated with the seriousness they deserved? When I travelled to Barbados, I saw evacuation signs with tsunami warnings pointing me in the direction where I could find safety if necessary. And from everything I’ve read and heard about these camps, it seems they’re located in a dangerous flash-flood area. Do they have evacuation signs posted with clear directions? Do they have warning sirens to indicate when an immediate evacuation is necessary? Do they have a system of emergency warnings delivered via cellphone, as we do in Ontario? Do they have floodlights in the event that a situation like this takes place at nighttime? Lastly: When children arrive at these camps, is there an evacuation drill just in case? Sadly, it appears that this natural disaster need not have been quite so devastating.

Maybe if we’d paid attention to global climate instability 20 years ago, those girls who died at summer camp in Texas might still be alive today. But even now, the impending climate disaster is something that few people seem to want to hear about.

A country that commits to spending 5 per cent of its GDP on defence will inevitably put billions of dollars toward weapons and war with other countries, potentially creating situations like those that exist now in Gaza, Ukraine and other conflict zones around the world and that have resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians, as well as caused chaos, famine, destruction and ruin. In recent days, we’ve seen as wildfires have caused vast devastation in several countries. Meanwhile, flooding in Texas has resulted in loss of life and billions of dollars’ worth of damages. So instead of committing to more war, perhaps countries should commit funds to controlling natural disasters such as wildfires, floods and other extreme weather events that have been exacerbated by climate change.
