Brampton Sikh activist Inderjeet Singh Gosal says he has received a stream of warnings from police that his life is in imminent danger, but said he has no intention of disappearing into witness protection.
鈥淚鈥檓 going to continue to do what I do,鈥 Gosal told The Star.
Gosal is Sikhs for Justice for Khalistan Referendum co-ordinator for Canada.
The group advocates for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland in the Punjab region, to be called Khalistan.
Gosal stepped into the leadership role vacated by Hardeep Singh Nijjar after his assassination in June 2023 on the grounds of a B.C. Sikh gurdwara.
Gosal said the RCMP alerted him on Wednesday to a grave and imminent threat to his life and formally offered witness protection.
Gosal said he believes Indian government agents are after him.
The Indian High Commission did not reply to requests for comment from The Star on Thursday and the RCMP had no immediate comment.
Gosal said he will not back down.
鈥淚 have to continue the campaign for the call for a referendum,鈥 he said.
Three months after Nijjar was gunned down, former prime minister Justin Trudeau accused agents of the Indian government of involvement in the shooting.
India denied any involvement.
鈥淎s a result of being the organizer of Khalistan Referendum, I am facing an imminent threat to my life from the agents and proxies of the government of India,鈥 Gosal said.
Gosal said he has been served with several 鈥淒uty To Warn鈥 notices by the Canadian authorities informing him of threats to his life.
鈥淢ost recently, on Sept. 10, 2025, officials from the RCMP visited me and informed me that there is a grave and imminent threat to my life and offered me to avail witness protection,鈥 Gosal said.
Gosal said he started receiving warnings from Canadian law enforcement including the RCMP in early 2024 and that there was a drive-by shooting on Feb. 12, 2024 at his house in Brampton.
鈥淥n August 23, 2024, the Ontario Provincial Police visited my home at midnight to inform me about the threat to my life,鈥 Gosal said in a prepared statement.
Another warning of a threat to his life came on Aug. 28, 2024, Gosal said. This time it was from the RCMP, he said.
The threats continued this summer, he said.
鈥淥n August 20, 2025, the RCMP visited me to inform me about the continuing threats to my life,鈥 Gosal said. 鈥淥n August 26, 2025, I was again informed by the RCMP that the threat against me still existed.
鈥淥n September 4, 2025, I received another update from the RCMP regarding the threats to my life.鈥
The RCMP told him on Monday of a 鈥渉igh-level threat鈥 against him, Gosal said.
鈥淭hat threat to my life causing issuance of 鈥楧uty To Warn鈥 Notices and offer of Witness Protection by RCMP emanates and originates only from the government of India, its agencies, agents and proxies in Canada because of my active participation and involvement in organizing Khalistan Referendum voting,鈥 Gosal said.
He called on the federal government to take immediate action against the continued operations of Indian diplomats and intelligence agents, also known as the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India’s primary foreign intelligence agency.
鈥淭heir proxies on Canadian soil which pose a direct challenge to Canada鈥檚 sovereignty and an imminent threat to the life and liberty of Khalistan Referendum activists,鈥 he said.
After Nijjar鈥檚 assassination in broad-daylight in Surrey on June 18, 2023, Canadian intelligence and law-enforcement agencies publicly identified the role of Indian diplomats and expelled officials tied to R&AW operations.
鈥淒espite these expulsions, India鈥檚 activities targeting the Khalistan Referendum activists resulting in the danger to the lives of pro Khalistan Canadians have only escalated,鈥 Gosal said.
鈥淭he Indian High Commission in Ottawa and consulates across Canada continue to function as outposts of R&AW espionage, surveillance, and assassination operations,鈥 he said in a prepared statement.
鈥淔rom these diplomatic premises, Indian officials and agents continue to recruit proxies and hit men to target Khalistan Referendum activists,鈥 Gosal continued. 鈥淭his is not diplomacy; it is state-sponsored extraterritorial violence being conducted under the shield of diplomatic immunity.鈥
