There are new hints about when the Finch West LRT will open 鈥 and what service will look like when it does.
According to an between the TTC and Metrolinx, the provincial transit agency expects the 11-kilometre light rail transit line to open by the end of 2024. The Finch West LRT was initially supposed to open in 2023 but was quietly delayed last summer.
“Significant progress has been made with major construction expected to wrap up soon,” she said. “All track and guideway works have been completed, all 116 station canopies are installed, and Finch West & Humber College stations are close to completion. A full fleet of 18 light rail vehicles are now onsite at the Finch West maintenance and storage facility.”
“Testing and commissioning works are well underway that will determine the opening date for revenue service,” Ernesaks added.
Metrolinx has promised to give a project update on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT every two months. In the last update, on Dec. 8, Verster gave reporters a tour of a polished-looking Eglinton Station but did not share an opening date. However, he promised to declare one three months in advance.
鈥淚 apologize to the businesses, to the communities, to the people of 色色啦 for the fact that this project is late,鈥 he said at the time. 鈥淲e are totally dedicated and totally focused on completing the project as soon as possible.”
Once the Finch LRT does open, its trains are scheduled to operate every 5-7 minutes during peak hours and every 7-10 minutes during off-peak hours, . By comparison, the 36 Finch West Bus, which the LRT will replace, is scheduled every 10 minutes during peak hours, though it is notoriously slow.
The Finch LRT is expected to carry 12 million riders per year by 2031, according to the report. The 18-stop LRT will connect with the TTC鈥檚 Line 1 as well as GO Transit, MiWay, Viva and Zum transit services.
