Montreal Canadiens goaie Ken Dryden (second from right) hams it up with the cast of Les canadiens, from left to right, Jeff Braunstein, Pierre Lenoir, Sebastien Chavernas, Jonathan Welsh and Len Doncheff, at ɫɫ Workshop Productions’ theatre in 1977. Dryden had a major role in shaping the play about his team that was written by Rick Salutin.

At some point during the 50 years we knew each other, I decided I wanted Ken Dryden to speak at my funeral. Not because he knew me best, but because he was so doggedly, uniquely conscientious that he’d labour till he got it right.

That’s how he played goal: anticipating every outcome, covering all angles in advance. He said he felt he should apologize to fans for getting set too early and making fewer of those lunging, “scintillating” saves that Habs’ broadcaster Danny Gallivan burbled about. It never occurred to me , which he did last Friday.
