Fairfax Centre for Free Enterprise

The Fairfax Centre for Free Enterprise
ContributedHuron recently announced a historic $10 million donation from Fairfax Financial Holding Limited to establish Canada’s first Fairfax Centre for Free Enterprise, highlighting its commitment to fostering innovation and sustainable economic growth. Launched in September, the Centre will connect students with Canada’s top business leaders through mentorship opportunities, a speaker series, and offer career-building experiences such as internships, business plan and case competitions, and innovation labs that prepare students to innovate, influence and inspire.
“With the creation of the Fairfax Centre for Free Enterprise at Huron University, we are making a statement: that we believe in Canada, and that it can be the land of opportunity for everyone, and that the free enterprise system that has helped to make the country what it is today should be recognized, maintained, and cultivated for the benefit of all Canadians. We believe that Huron University can help lead a revival of the entrepreneurial spirit that is key to our shared future,” said Prem Watsa, Chairman and CEO of Fairfax.

An innovative program designed to instill career confidence and distinguish Huron graduates as emerging leaders, through a comprehensive approach, Scotiabank CAP combines practical skills and industry experience with academic learning. In addition to creating a career development plan, students complete a guaranteed paid internship, engage in volunteer work, benefit from alumni mentorship, and participate in professional development workshops and technology modules. This ensures that they aren’t just prepared for employment, but also for impactful careers. Funding for the Scotiabank CAP is enabled through ScotiaRISE, Scotiabank’s $500 million community investment initiative designed to help people reach their full potential including through programs that support post-secondary education and career development.
“Scotiabank CAP gave me the structure and support to build a career strategy early in my undergrad. The hands-on internship experience and alumni mentorship helped me build confidence and develop skills that have stayed relevant across different opportunities. It’s a program that truly helps you stand out,” said Pradyun Bajaj, BMOS ‘24, Management and Organizational Studies and current Sales Development Representative at Salesforce in ɫɫ.

Huron’s History

Huron University (nee Huron College) under construction during its relocation to its current home in 1950-1951.
ContributedAs the founding institution of Western University, established in 1863, Huron has a proud history of academic excellence and is renowned for the personalized experience it creates for students. With just over 2,000 students across business, the arts, and social sciences, Huron offers an intimate post-secondary experience that many larger institutions can’t replicate. This unique environment fosters a culture of care, providing dedicated one-to-one support that nurtures student success while encouraging “leadership with heart,” a value-based educational philosophy that asks students to lead with empathy, conscience and integrity. This enables Huron University to offer a distinctive educational experience, producing graduates who navigate their careers with purpose and principle as they take on the challenges of a complex world.
This blueprint for post-grad success has resulted in many alumni now leading at some of Canada’s largest companies, including Sobeys, Shopify and Porter Airlines.
