Hohl was as part of an aviation battalion under a NATO-aligned, multinational deployment of troops meant to help deter Russian aggression in eastern Europe.

He had served with the Canadian military for almost 20 years, including his current assignment as a vehicle technician with the Edmonton helicopter squadron, as well as deployments with Operation Lentus — natural disaster responses in Canada — and Operation Globe, delivering international aid and services.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said on social media he learned of Hohl’s death with “deep sadness.”

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my deepest condolences to Warrant Officer Hohl’s family, friends, and to all those who served with him,” he wrote.

Gen, Jennie Carignan, chief of the defence staff, offered her condolences to Hohl’s family and loved ones, adding that he will be remembered for his many years of dedicated service and his death “has hit us all very hard.”

Operation Reassurance is currently the CAF’s largest overseas mission with roughly 3,000 Canadians deployed, according to theÌý. It was renewed for an additional three years during Carney’s visit to Latvia in late August.
