A 24-year-old woman has died after a fire at Richmond Hill home Monday that also took the life of an 11-year-old girl.
York police announced that Helya Bahari-Kashani succumbed to her injuries Wednesday, making her the second member of the family of five who were injured from the fire that investigators have called arson.
The 11-year-old girl died in hospital Tuesday and the other three family members are still in critical condition.聽
The fire ripped through the family home, in the area of ,聽early Monday morning at around 3 a.m. Crews found one of the family members outside though the four others were unconscious, and had to be pulled out of the burning building.
The fire was initially deemed 鈥渟uspicious鈥 ahead of a press conference Wednesday, where investigators labelled it arson for the first time publicly. An official from the office of the fire marshal earlier told reporters that the home had working smoke alarms.
The fire marshal continues to conduct a parallel investigation alongside police.
Insp. Paolo Fiore told reporters that police investigators were continuing to work through video, something he said takes time, and that they did not have a suspect description.
鈥淩ichmond Hill is a community of communities and losing somebody like this 鈥 under any circumstances 鈥 is incredibly sad and it affects all of us,鈥 Mayor David West said in a phone interview with the Star Wednesday.
鈥淢ore than anything our thought is with the families that are affected.鈥
