After back-to-back violent home invasions, York Region’s police chief has a clear message:
“Don鈥檛 engage unless absolutely necessary.鈥
Chief Jim MacSween and top investigators provided updates to reporters Wednesday on the deadly home invasion that claimed the life of father Abdul Aleem Farooqi on Sunday. Investigators also shared that a second attempted home invasion had taken place two hours later less than one kilometre away from the Vaughan home.
“In the unlikely event that you find yourself the victim of a home invasion, we are urging citizens not to take matters into their own hands,” MacSween said.
“While we don鈥檛 want homeowners to feel powerless, we urge you to call 9-1-1 and do everything you can to keep yourself and loves ones safe until police arrive and be the best witness possible. This could mean locking yourself in a room away from the perpetrators, hiding, fleeing the home, but don鈥檛 engage unless absolutely necessary.鈥
The chief sidestepped questions about politicians like , focusing his comments on advising homeowners to avoid any interactions with home invaders. The comments also follow a case in Lindsay, Ont., where an apartment resident was charged with assault following a break-in.听

Abdul Aleem Farooqi was killed while defending his family during a home invasion at his home in Kleinburg, Ont. on Aug. 31.
Submitted by Rizwan Ahmad“The premier can make his own statement and his own mind up about that,” MacSween said when asked about Ford’s comments. “What I would say is as a police service, we’ll follow the laws as they’re written. If the laws change we’ll change with the laws.”
He continued: “But as it stands we know the best defence for most people is to comply.”聽
Police encouraged residents to keep home surveillance systems functional, alarms active, cell phones charged and available as well as checking locks, lights and looking out for neighbours. They urged homeowners not to keep “excessive” valuables in their residences.
Investigators said they responded to a 9-1-1 call for a home invasion in Kleinburg, Ont., at 12:53 a.m. on Sunday. They found聽Farooqi, dead from gunshot wounds, at the home.
Insp. Paolo Fiore said the men forced entry from a rear door of the home.
He offered basic suspect descriptions: One man, six-feet-tall with broad shoulders wearing a mask and dark clothing; a second man, five-feet-nine tall wearing a mask and dark clothing; and a third man, thin build wearing a mask and dark clothing.
The three suspects fled through the rear door into a dark SUV with three of the family members’ phones. Police found two discarded nearby.听
Under questioning, investigators continued to insist the public was not at risk, despite saying they are reviewing another home invasion at 2:20 a.m. the same morning to determine if they are related.
Doorbell camera footage released by the police Wednesday shows three suspects, one armed with what looks to be a handgun, approaching the front door of a home near Major Mackenzie Drive and Highway 27.
The suspects are wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks. One, wearing gloves, appears to attempt to remove the doorbell camera before the person with the gun uses it to hit and break the glass window beside the front door.听
A woman can be heard screaming in the background as the person reaches in to unlock the door.听
“Get out of here,” one of the people inside the home can be heard yelling as an alarm goes off. A dog barks. Moments later the three suspects flee down the home’s front steps.
Similar to the earlier home invasion, the three suspects fled in a dark-coloured SUV, police said. Two adults and two children were home at the time of the attempted robbery, a press release said.
Farooqi’s home was “specifically targeted for a robbery,” Fiore said, and the suspects’ motive was “monetary gain only.” Farooqi, he said, was not involved in any criminal activity and was a devout Muslim and business owner.
But why they chose that house specifically, investigators could not or did not say.
