He dressed in drag for a tiki party, and found a new confidence, community 鈥 and cheekbones

After some 色色啦 drag artists gave him a warm welcome, he plans to use his alter ego to share stories about the city鈥檚 architecture.

Dave LeBlanc鈥檚 transformation into Irma Girdle included a vintage-style waitress dress, size 11 pumps, and a crash course in makeup 鈥 revealing a confident, creative side he hadn鈥檛 expected.


My eyes looked bigger and somehow more expressive, my cheeks rosier, my lips rich and full 鈥 and I had cheekbones. I鈥檇 already named her Irma Girdle, picked a wig, and practiced walking in heels, but nothing prepared me for the moment I saw her 鈥 really saw her 鈥 staring back at me in the motel room mirror in upstate New York. Despite being just a reflection, I felt transformed. Irma wasn鈥檛 just a costume 鈥 she was me ... but a different me.

By the end of the weekend, I realized I was OK with that. Stepping into Irma鈥檚 pumps wasn鈥檛 just dress-up 鈥 it became a creative outlet, one that brought joy to me and to others. But I wasn鈥檛 sure where to begin. For that, I鈥檇 need a sherpa.
