There is nothing like this all-new 2025 BMW M5 Touring on the road today. Other hyper wagons come close, but they don’t have everything this M5 Touring has to offer. This is a Dr.-Jekyll-and-Mr.-Hyde kind of car.
This wagon will be as comfortable pounding around a race track with its high-revving V8 engine, as it is silently gliding along in the HOV (EV?) lanes on the highway.
Turns out you can have your cake and eat it. You have a V8 powered muscle car, an EV, with the added practicality of a station wagon, all in one. The M5 sedan has 466 litres (16.5 cubic feet) of cargo capacity with the rear seats up. The M5 touring has 500 litres (17 cubic feet) of cargo space with the rear seats up and more than triple that (1,630 litres/57 cubic feet) with the rear seats down. How practical is that?!?
The turbocharged V8 powered M5 is also a Plugin Electric Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV). It has an all-electric range of 40 kilometres at speeds of up to 140 km/h. The twin-turbo 4.4-litre engine makes 577 horsepower and 553 pounds-feet of torque. Its electric motor, mounted within the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, produces 194 hp and 207 pound-feet of torque. The engine and motor can combine to generate a pulse-pounding 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes just 3.6 seconds. In a station wagon!
To slow it down this 2,500 kg/5,500 pound wagon has the optional ($10,900) massive gold M carbon ceramic brakes lurking behind big 20- and 21-inch double spoke midnight grey wheels. These brakes are about 25 kg or 55 pounds lighter than the standard M compound brakes. They provide stronger braking power, are able to withstand fade, can handle the heat better and are more resistant to wear.
Every time you get behind the wheel of this beast, it is a driving event.
It puts a smile on your face and provides plenty of wows along the way. Hybrid is the default drive mode. In all electric mode, the engine only kicks in if more power is needed based on the driver’s acceleration. Comfort mode uses the electric motor as much as it can, depending on its level of charge. Sport and Sport Plus modes use the V8 engine. Dynamic and Dynamic Plus modes use the V8 and electric motor for … track use.
This is the first time BMW is bringing the M5 Touring to Canada and the United States. Europeans have had the fun of driving these practical performance wagons since they were introduced in 1992, in the form of the second generation M5.
It’s here, the carmaker says, because Canadians asked for it, in record numbers. More than 7,000 Canadians made their voices heard during BMW’s campaign asking if they should bring this car to Canada. That’s a record for engagement on BMW’s website and social media channels. Half of the M5s coming to Canada will be wagons.
Everything about this car shouts luxury, versatility, performance. The adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Servotronic steering with integral active four-wheel steering, M sport differential and near 50:50 weight distribution all contribute and work in harmony to deliver the handling and ride you would expect from this next generation M car.
This M5 touring is in Frozen Brilliant White metallic paint, a $6,000-option. If you “build” the car on the BMW Canada website, you have 34 colours to choose from. But if you go to the BMW Individual Visualizer site (individual.bmw-m.com), you can choose from more than 120 different colours, which include Vegas Red and Isle of Man Green Metallic (no charge) Daytona Violet Metallic and Liquid Copper ($5,000) and Frozen Purple ($6,000).
This M5 Touring is a high performance do-it-all, four-door wagon that impresses with every drive. Other than the sunroof not opening, this bimmer checks almost every box. Yes it is expensive, but, as they say: you get what you pay for.
